Why couches are harder to get rid of than you'd think
Couches are heavy, awkward on stairs, and most curbside trash programs either refuse them outright or charge a bulk-item fee that isn't posted anywhere obvious. Add a narrow hallway or a walk-up apartment and a simple task turns into a two-person, two-hour project.
The five real options
- Curb alert / free listing: Works if the couch is in genuinely good condition and you're not in a hurry — can take days or weeks to find a taker.
- Donation pickup: Many local charities will pick up furniture in good condition, but they're selective about stains, tears, and pet damage.
- Municipal bulk trash day: Cheapest option where available, but usually limited to one or two scheduled days a month.
- Retailer haul-away: Some furniture retailers remove your old piece when delivering a new one — worth asking before you buy.
- Junk removal service: The only option that works same-day, regardless of condition, and doesn't require you to move it yourself.
When it's worth just making the call
If the couch is damaged, you're on a deadline (move-out, new furniture delivery, a listing photo shoot), or there's simply no realistic way to get it down your stairs alone, a same-day pickup ends up cheaper than the hours lost trying the DIY route.
